Printer HP Printer Driver, Laserjet
Monochrome laser printers have a reputation for being rather boring workhorses, there just to get the job done. HP has raised their level of interest with the HP LaserJet Pro N404dw, however, by the simple means of adding a colour LCD touchscreen, the kind commonly found on its inkjet all-in-ones.
Design and functionality
The screen folds onto a multi-position stem, although on our test sample the screen was a little asymmetrical to the top cover, perhaps due to a knock. All dressed up in black, the front of the top panel looks pretty busy.
There's a cover release, a fold-out paper stop and a mysterious depression on the top edge. At the front, there's a strange wrap-around panel, which might be useful if it held loose sheets of paper, but seems to be purely decorative.
There's a 250-sheet paper tray at the bottom of the machine with a 50-sheet drop-down multipurpose tray above it. A 500-sheet tray is available as an option, for a total capacity of 800 sheets.

At the rear are sockets for USB and Gigabit Ethernet, although there is no wireless support on this machine. To get all the goodies online and print from Android or iOS devices, you'll need to use a network connection for the printer.
Once registered with HP Connect, you can download useful preset templates and print them directly from the touchscreen. There is also a USB socket on the front panel and you can view thumbnails of documents and images before printing them directly from a USB drive.
When you fold down the front panel, you can access the one-piece drum and toner cartridge, which are easy to insert for easy servicing. The cartridge is available in two capacities, with enough toner even in the standard offer to avoid the need for continuous replacement.
Print speeds
HP rates the HP LaserJet Pro N404dw at 33ppm, but in our 5-page text test it managed just 15.8ppm, although this rose to 23.5ppm with the larger 20-page text document. Even this top speed doesn't come close to HP's claim, although it is faster than rivals Samsung or Brother.
It managed 17.7ppm on the 5-page text and graphics test and 13.0 sides per minute when the 20-page document was printed double-sided. It took 11s to print a 15 x 10cm photo from a PC and 9s to do so from an image on a USB stick.
HP LaserJet Pro N404dw
Text print quality is very good, completely free of toner splatter and with sharp, well-defined characters. Greyscale business graphics are also clear and well-defined and there are enough shades of grey to effectively reproduce the colours of an original. There is a little banding in the filled-in areas, but nothing to complain about.
Photo reproduction is also good, with smooth transitions in the sky and even some detail in the shadows, which is often lost in monochrome laser prints. The printer is quieter than many of its rivals, peaking at 61 dBA at 0.5m.
Both drum and toner cartridges are available in 2,700- or 6,900-page units, and using the high-capacity version gives a cost per page of 2.5p. That's slightly lower than its rivals, but much depends on the price of online consumables you can find on the day.
Verdict
HP LaserJet Pro N404dw is a good monochrome laser for general use in small offices. It prints quickly, produces good text, graphics and photos and is relatively cheap to run, although it doesn't have a wireless connection. Its winning feature is the colour touch-screen control panel, which opens up a host of additional functions.
